Do You Need to be Good at Swimming to be a Flight Attendant?

The question: Do you need to be good at swimming to be a flight attendant is often asked by a lot of aspiring flight attendants.

In this post, we will answer that question.

Do you need to be good at swimming to be a flight attendant?

The short answer? You don’t need to be an expert swimmer.

However,  basic swimming ability is usually required.

Why swimming skills matter in the aviation industry

Safety is always the top priority in aviation. While emergencies are rare, flight attendants are trained to handle all types of situations—including water landings.

In the event of a ditching (an emergency landing on water), cabin crew must:

  • Assist passengers in evacuating the aircraft
  • Deploy life vests and flotation devices
  • Guide passengers to safety in the water

Because of this, airlines require cabin crew to be comfortable in water and able to follow safety procedures effectively.

What level of swimming is required?

Most airlines don’t expect you to be a competitive swimmer. However, you should be able to:

  • Swim a short distance (usually around 25 meters)
  • Stay afloat or tread water for a few minutes
  • Feel confident moving in water without panic

Requirements may vary depending on the airline, but these basic skills are generally enough.

Can you still apply if you’re not a strong swimmer?

Yes, you can! Many aspiring flight attendants start with little to no swimming experience. The good news is that this is a skill you can easily learn and improve over time.

With proper training and practice, you can build your confidence in the water—just like you would develop other essential skills for the role.

How flight attendant training helps

Reputable training centers, like PTC Aviation, help prepare students for real-life scenarios, including water survival training. This ensures that future cabin crew members are ready, confident, and capable of handling emergency situations.

Through guided instruction, you’ll learn:

  • Basic survival swimming techniques
  • Proper use of life vests and flotation devices
  • How to assist passengers calmly and efficiently

Final thoughts

You don’t need to be an Olympic-level swimmer to become a flight attendant—but being comfortable in the water is important. With the right mindset and training, swimming is just one of many skills you can develop on your journey to the skies.

If becoming a flight attendant is your goal, don’t let this requirement hold you back. Instead, see it as another step toward becoming a well-prepared and confident aviation professional.
