Flight Attendant Requirements

Becoming a flight attendant is a dream career for many.

Why not? After all, being a flight attendant offers travel opportunities, competitive benefits, and a dynamic work environment.

However, before you can take to the skies, it’s important to understand the essential flight attendant requirements that airlines look for in candidates.

This guide breaks down everything you need to know to help you prepare and stand out in the application process.

Flight Attendant Requirement

Educational Background

One of the basic flight attendant requirements is a minimum educational qualification. Most airlines require:

  • At least a high school diploma or senior high school graduate
  • A college degree is an advantage, but not always required. Nonetheless, it is always better to have a college degree. Hence, it’s best to apply after graduation.

Courses related to tourism, hospitality, or communication can give you an edge, especially in competitive airline hiring processes.

Age and Physical Standards

Airlines also have specific physical and age-related flight attendant requirements, which may vary slightly by company:

  • Minimum age: typically 18 to 21 years old
  • Height requirement: must be able to reach overhead bins (usually around 5’2” for females and 5’6” for males, depending on airline)
  • Proportionate weight to height
  • Good posture and overall grooming

Clear skin and a professional appearance are also important, as flight attendants represent the airline’s brand.

Communication Skills

Strong communication skills are a core part of flight attendant requirements. Since you’ll be dealing with passengers from different backgrounds, you must be able to:

  • Speak English fluently (additional languages are a plus)
  • Communicate clearly and confidently
  • Handle passenger concerns with professionalism.

Excellent interpersonal skills can significantly improve your chances of being hired.

Customer Service Experience

While not always mandatory, many airlines prefer candidates with experience in customer-facing roles. This includes:

  • Hospitality (hotels, restaurants)
  • Retail or sales
  • Tourism-related jobs

Customer service experience demonstrates your ability to handle different situations, which is an essential part of flight attendant requirements.

Health and Fitness

Flight attendants must be physically fit to handle the demands of the job. Common health-related flight attendant requirements include:

  • Passing a medical examination
  • Good eyesight (with or without corrective lenses, depending on airline)
  • Ability to swim (some airlines require this for safety training)

The role can be physically demanding, so stamina and overall wellness are key.

Training and Certification

Once hired, candidates must complete airline-provided training programs. These typically cover:

  • Safety procedures and emergency protocols
  • Survival swimming
  • First aid and basic life support
  • Aircraft familiarization

Completing training successfully is a non-negotiable part of flight attendant requirements before officially starting the job.

Personality and Attitude

Beyond technical qualifications, airlines look for the right personality. Important traits include:

  • Confidence and professionalism
  • Adaptability and teamwork
  • Positive attitude and emotional resilience

Flight attendants often deal with challenging situations, so maintaining composure is crucial.

Conclusion: Meeting Flight Attendant Requirements

Understanding flight attendant requirements is the first step toward launching your aviation career. While each airline may have slightly different standards, the core qualifications remain consistent—education, communication skills, physical fitness, and the right attitude.

If you’re serious about becoming a flight attendant, investing in proper training and preparation can give you a strong advantage and help turn your dream into reality.
